Hulk SMASH!!!!!

Hey guys here is a quicky I did of the hulk. Just trying to switch up proportions a bit. Hahah I have nothing else to say. Enjoy!

Arachnophobia...

I usually start each day by warming up with some quick loose drawings. It usually takes me about an hour before I'm ready to tackle the more refined stuff. Some days I spend just doing these little drawings. They're are super fun because you get to see results almost immediately, as well it alleviates the pressure of making "pretty" pictures. I usually use spiderman as my subject for warmups. His rubber limbs let me twist, and bend, and put him in pretty much any pose I think of. Another great reason Spiderman is fun is that his body does most of the communicating, since he's wearing a mask I'm forced to use gesture to communicate emotion.


The piece on the bottom is the finished version of the poster for my brother's birthday. You can see the pencil work in the previous post. I'm really happy with the results. I asked my buddy Qiqo to drop some colours in, and his final colours are AMAZING! THANKS A BUNCH QIQO! You can see his work here.

This is a drawing for my brother's birthday. I didn't do much rendering in this one because I'm hoping to add some colour to it. I've had this idea in my head for quite some time, just never been able to pull it off. She is missing a tattoo of my brother's DJ logo on her butt. I'll add that later in photoshop.

Friday Night Lights...

Thanks to the writer's strike I'm stuck drawing the actors from my favorite TV shows. But on the the plus side drawing from magazines is loads of fun. This is Taylor Kitsch From 'Friday Night Lights', he was on the cover of one of my Mens Health magz. Like the last post I approached this sketch with style in mind. I'm a little unhappy about he abs, the shadows look more like those tattoos of black fire and not forms/planes turning away from light or under cast shadow. The face has a nice quality to it, although the eyes feel a little rigid. I think the overall sketch has a nice asthetic quality to it, and the proportions also feel right.

This is my first post. I figure I can use this blog as a sort of journal to track my proegression. There is a significant difference in my work and what is scanned. I guess that's what happends when you cheap out and buy a 40$ scanner. You always get what you pay for. But this will be fixed soon.

Since this is my first post I'll share a little info about myself. For those who already know me, thanks for stopping by!

My name is Curtis Hsiung, I've been working in Toronto, ON. the past 2 years as an animator. At this point in time, I'm taking a break from work to persue my drawing/painting full time. In a nutshell, I love to animate but I don't find it as creatively satisfying as illustration/design. And I keep going back to pencil and paper so I figure it was about time I put in some 'real' time.

Anyway, a little about what I'm posting. I've been searching for my artistic voice or my "style" as some would call it. So I'm doing a lot of drawing that explores a more styalized approach. Most of the drawing I do is from life, or just straight out of the head, but I ocasionally dip into magazines or even go as far as completely recreating artwork that already exists. Of course any time I recreate another artist's work it is for education only, and gets filed in my "it was bitten" book, in other words you'll never see it here. I was studying heads yesterday and I was using a Maxim cover with Jessical Alba as my reference. I liked the results of the sketch. Of course I look at it today and there are many things I would change, but, that's the beauty of the learning process.
